Honig Winery Happy Hour

A friend and I attended the Honig Winery Happy Hour at Fahrenheit in Tremont. I had the Roasted Beets with Goat Cheese, Arugula and Pistachios for $6, the Four Cheese Ravioli, Pancetta and Roasted Peppers, Parmesan and Basil for $6, and a glass of the Honig Winery Cabernet Sauvignon for $9 a glass. The winery is located an hour away from San Francisco and I could certainly taste that it was a quality wine. I also really enjoyed my appetizers. I will definitely go back to try Farhenheit's regular happy hour, which features appetizers ranging in price from $2 to $4.
The crowd was definitely older than us, which means 30 to middle aged. There were the suited after work crowd and then your typical see and be seen socialites. Either way there was a relaxed, non-pretentious atmosphere. The bartender was dressed up for the occasion but didn't look stuffy, just fashionable, probably due to the fact that he didn't include the suit jacket in his ensemble just the tie and vest. The president of the winery was walking around checking on guests, and I snagged his card for my trip to San Francisco this weekend. I went away thinking...I hope more great wineries take advantage of the growing Tremont area.

After drinks we couldn't help but try to make bad retail decisions. Unfortunately, we didn't buy anything at Banyan Tree but looking at the clothes was enough retail therapy for me.

Madoff's victims sale

Back from New York and thought I would post this interesting photo from a New York Times article about a store in Greenwich Village on Bleecker street that is advertising 20% off if your name made Madoff's list.

NYC, I want to go to there

So, I'm heading to New York for work, bright and early tommorow morning. I'm so excited. My dream is that I will meet Tina Fey, we will become best friends, and she will invite me to be on her show, 30 Rock.
But, really I will be sitting through meetings all day. Woo-hoo!

Do these pass?

Could these pass as something trendy and expensive? Or do they clearly look like they are from Payless? Personally, I think these would be the perfect little addition to your spring/summer 2009 wardrobe. They may even outlast the trend. What do you think? Leave your comment.

The Liberty Mutual Commercial Song

You know that great song from the Liberty Mutual Commercials? Apparently it is called, Half Acre by Hem. I just thought it was really pretty. Happy Friday!

Drug Store versus Salon Brand for curly hair

Victory is mine!
For a long time I had been using Aveda’s be curly curl enhancing lotion for styling my hair. Recently I noticed a change in my hair. It was looking really limp and frizzy, and the curl wasn’t really holding. I don’t blame Aveda, but I do blame my lack of knowledge of my own hair and how to properly apply this lotion.
Well, anyways, I figured, why am I spending $20 on my product when it’s not even working? I might as well try one of these drug store brands. With some research I found some reviews of Garnier Fructis curl construct mousse.
What I like about it is that it spreads very evenly through my hair. There is no need to worry about applying too much or too little. It is much easier to apply than the Aveda product. Once in my hair it actually holds my curl through blow-drying without my hair getting really frizzy, and it only cost a little over $3 at Target. The reason it works for my hair is because even though my hair is very thick it still is oily. So, I need something with a strong hold, which is why I like the mousse. If you have thin hair this probably will end up giving your hair that really crunchy look.
What is your curly hair regimen?

Free music!

I know you have been sitting at your computer itching for new music from Itunes. And you're thinking to yourself, "I wish the economy was better so I could be more sure of my 99 cent purchase."

But you don't have to worry because NPR is giving away 10 free songs from the Music at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, TX. NPR will be airing the show tonight at 1 a.m. It will feature 1,800 bands, some, undiscovered talent. Artists include the Decemberists. Great stuff!

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Images from the Chicago Tribune.

My favorite Irish Poet

Excerpt from Digging by Seamus Heaney

My grandfather could cut more turf in a day
Than any other man on Toner's bog.
Once I carried him milk in a bottle
Corked sloppily with paper. He straightened up
To drink it, then fell to right away
Nicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods
Over his shoulder, digging down and down
For the good turf. Digging.

The cold smell of potato mold, the squelch and slap
Of soggy peat, the curt cuts of an edge
Through living roots awaken in my head.
But I've no spade to follow men like them.

Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests.
I'll dig with it.

H&M Web site

I am a big fan of online shopping. Living in Cleveland you have to resort to these means since stores like H&M don't even compare to the ones in Chicago and New York.

So that leads me to this question: Do any of you have to resort to shopping on H&M's Web site? Have you had a good experience?

This dress for instance is on the Web site for €9,90, approximately 13 US dollars.

Have a beautiful weekend!

Aren't the women in this photo beautiful? Beauty can be at any age!

Color trends

I have always been into neutral colors, light pinks, and creams. I saw a spread in the March issue of Vogue on it, but I haven't seen a lot of examples (besides the ones they provided and the Dace dresses below). Are there any examples of it in this season's runways? Or even in ready to wear brands?

Listen while I work

So, I watched the movie French Kiss for the first time this weekend. I know it's an old movie, but give me a break, I was in the 5th grade when it came out. At the end of the movie this version of La vie en rose is playing. I found Louis Armstrong's voice to these lyrics and the jazzy trumpet charming beyond words so I thought I would share. Sorry this is just a slide show of pictures.

(You also may have heard it in Something's Gotta Give and Wall*E)

Interesting Photography

You know when you're watching Saturday Night Live and you see those really cool photos flash up of the guest host or a cast member right before they go to commercial? Well, Mary Ellen Matthews is the woman behind those cool shots. You can see her work here and an interview with her here. Who doesn't love Christopher Walken? Ow, ow!

Winter chic

Clearly, this is the cutest way to walk around in the winter. A jean jacket over a dress or skirt with leggings, scarf, and big mittens. This is one of my favorite outfits. It's casual but says, "I give a damn about how I look" at the same time. What do you think?

Photos from The Sartorialist and Glamour who also think this look works.

Have a warm weekend!

We finally might see some warm weather this weekend in Cleveland, and if you don't have any plans you should get tickets to the Joan Baez concert. They are only $10.

Girl crush: Chan Marshall

Chan Marshall, singer and songwriter goes by the stage name, Cat Power. Jukebox is her latest album and her cover of Sea of Love is on the Juno soundtrack. She seems crazy talented and also just crazy.

"New York" from her new album. She reminds me of Feist, but is a little darker like Fiona Apple.

Columbus: The Red Stable for Vintage Jewelry

The Red Stable is in the heart of German Village in Columbus right by the Schmidt Haus. Anyways, this little shop had unique beads and things to make your own jewelry with as well as some already made pieces. In a couple of the display cases we happened to find some really interesting vintage jewelry. The owner of this store must have a good eye for finding good vintage pieces that are not really expensive. The Web site goes by a different name, Mars Creations.

Our purchases:

Vintage cuff link with fish detail, $10

Vintage cuff links with centurions, $10

Vintage glass pearls with clasp, $40

Oh yeah, U2 has a new album!

Here they are on the first night of five appearances on Letterman singing "Breathe" from their new album No Line on the Horizon.

The Snuggie on the street!

This New York Times reporter was assigned to see how the snuggie performs in public, specifically in Manhattan. These photos are amazing!! Go to the slide show to read the captions. They are hilarious.

The 'real' women

I loved the different personalities of the women in the movie "Vicky Cristina Barcelona". Have you ever felt like the neurotic, free spirit, or the straight laced girl?
